"My understanding of and appreciation for cultural competence has definitely been improved by participating in this training!"

I had the opportunity to participate in the Cultural Competency Training provided by Dr. Bell. I am grateful to Dr. Bell for providing this training, and found the experience to be quite beneficial.

The course was well organized and the material clearly presented. Audience participation exercises were relevant and added to the understanding of the material. Dr. Bell was also able to use personal experience to highlight several important concepts presented in the training. Several of these ideas were new to me, which served to improve my understanding of this important topic.

My awareness of the influence of culture on interactions will benefit me not only in being better able to serve my patients, but in my interactions in all aspects of my life. I recommend this training strongly for anyone wishing to gain a better understanding of the ways that culture influence our interactions with our fellow human beings."

- Dr. Brian E. Thomas, MD MBA

Medical Director Wexford /IDOC Northern Region

"I would highly recommend Dr. Bell to present this lecture everywhere that provides mental health care!"

"As a case manager in the community that works with youth and families, this information Dr. Bell presented is crucial to learn and implement. It gives clear and concise information on cultural competency that helps to strengthen your own weaknesses. The cultural IQ quiz was eye opening to me as I thought I had no biases. It had challenged me to work through these to be a better case manager to the families I work with. As Dr. Bell says in her training, cultural competency is a “lifelong process” and it is important to be aware and make changes within yourself. I would highly recommend Dr. Bell to present this lecture everywhere that provides mental health care along with reading her book “Are you Culturally Competent?”

"Attending Dr. Bell’s cultural competency presentation provided critical professional development for my workplace. "

"Attending Dr. Bell’s cultural competency presentation provided critical professional development for my workplace. Dr. Bell contributed practical vignettes that illustrated different cultural perspectives of patients and the ways in which I, as a clinician, can utilize those perspectives to be a more effective practitioner. Additionally, Dr. Bell unpacked the inequalities that patients of different cultures often face in the healthcare system providing me insight into personal and systemic biases that impact quality of care. Finally, Dr. Bell is an engaging and charismatic speaker, which creates a space where attendees are willing to explore their own biases. I highly recommend attendance at her presentations."

"Dr. Bell is a national expert on Cultural Competence!"

"I have had exposure to the topic of Cultural Competence in the past, but never have I heard the content delivered in such an personal and emotionally genuine fashion. When Dr. Bell gave the audience real life examples related to cultural issues from her practice, they served to make real the concepts she presented to her audience.

Attending one of her lectures will be an impactful and significant step in their professional development. I would advise them that not only is the content of her presentation enlightening but her presentation style is engaging and interactive. Finally, I would share that I had the opportunity to get to know Dr. Bell better before and after the presentation and I would let them know that Dr. Bell is as generous and gracious as a person as she is a presenter."

"It left me with a feeling of empowerment and entitlement of better services from providers."

Dr. Bell spoke at the Springfield and Central Illinois African American History Museum and shared with us the importance of Cultural Competency in the medical field. The audience included museum members, teachers, correctional facility workers, and others. She enlightened the audience on cultural competency, a subject that we have often discussed among each other but never heard addressed by a professional in a public setting. We felt information provided us allowed us to feel that it is realistic to expect those providing services to our community to respect and understand the diversity of the cultures they serve. It left me with a feeling of empowerment and entitlement of better services from providers. Cultural Competency allows providers to give better service and receive better results.

"Dr. Bell provided an excellent template for building a culturally competent skillset."

I had the pleasure of attending a workshop on “Cultural Competency Ethical Practice in Mental Health”, presented by Elisa Bell, M.D. at Bethel College, Mishawaka, In. Most of the participants were nursing students which was critical because medical professionals need knowledge of themselves and others in an increasingly diverse society. Dr. Bell provided an excellent template for building a culturally competent skillset. She provided handouts for future reference and a questionnaire, entitled “Cultural IQ” for self- reflection. She was knowledgeable, engaging and provided participants the opportunity to explore their own consciousness. She is a person who graciously shares her wisdom, knowledge and experience for others.
